Our first three nights in Havana we spent in the colonial Casa Rolando y Marisol or otherwise called La Casa del Chef. Perfectly located in Habana Vieja, the casa was just a few steps away from the waterfront and Plaza de San Francisco.
I have to say that staying with Rolando and Marisol was one of our many highlights during our visit to Cuba. On our arrival we were greeted with a complimentary Mojito on their lovely colourful terrace. It was a perfect start to our holiday.

One of our criteria when looking for a casa particular in Havana was to book something with a terrace, so we can enjoy a drink in the evening after walking around the city all day.
The house was full of good energy and the hosts were absolutely lovely. It’s a shame we couldn’t speak Spanish, but Rolando could speak some English and made us feel very welcome.
Our casa was always buzzing, Rolando was walking about with his tiny cups of Cuban coffee and Marisol was always chatting away in Spanish on the phone on the terrace. It felt like we were staying with our own family.
They would also have some friends around for coffee and with one of them I had a lovely chat in Russian. He told me that when he was around 16, he went to Moscow to learn Russian, and also was in the Russian army.
He’s now over 70 and even though he doesn’t get to speak the language much, his Russian was excellent. It was such a great experience.
Amazing breakfast at our casa
Not only was the atmosphere great in the casa, but also the food. Every morning we enjoyed home cooked breakfast, which was the best breakfast we had in Cuba.
We would start with a variety of fruit and freshly squeezed juice, which was different (and amazing) every morning. Then we would move on to Rolando’s special – omelette. I don’t think we had a better omelette anywhere else. Oh, and it came with warm brioche.
And for the 3rd course we’d have a couple of slices of still warm, fresh and yummy banana bread accompanied with tea and coffee.
The coffee was strong and so good, freshly made every morning. They used proper Cuban coffee, grown in the mountains. Following Rolando’s recommendations, I brought some home.
You can’t just buy Cuban coffee in the shops, at least I couldn’t see it anywhere, but I was lucky to find it in the Cayo Guillermo resort, where we stayed towards the end of our trip.
One evening we also enjoyed home cooked dinner, a massive lobster for me and a filet of pork for Charlie. It was excellent.
When visiting Cuba, it’s a must to stay in a casa particular. This way you can meet the locals and enjoy their hospitality. Unless you decide to stay in a historic Hotel Nacional de Cuba or Inglaterra. But even though, I’d still recommend staying in casa particular.
